Breneman Wins 600th Career Victory, Softball Takes Doubleheader Sweep

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team swept The Southern Conference (SoCon) doubleheader against Chattanooga on Saturday at UNCG Softball Stadium.

The Spartans won 7-3 in game one and then claimed a 9-1 five-inning walk-off victory in game two. The win in game two was Head Coach Janelle Breneman's 600th career win. Of the 600 wins, 469 have been while with the Blue & Gold, while 75 were with East Stroudsburg and 56 were at Bucknell.

The Spartans had 11 hits in game two, which marks the 20th game this season with double-figure base knocks.

The Spartans are now 37-15 overall and 15-2 in the conference, while the Mocs are 18-27-1 overall and 6-11 in the SoCon.

  • After a scoreless first inning, Laney Deane put the first hit and run on the board with her 13th homer of the season, giving UNCG a 1-0 lead.
  • The Spartans then strung together three hits for four runs in the bottom of the third for a 5-0 advantage.
  • Following a leadoff walk from Madelyn McKinnon, Jazmin Mejia singled and then on Macy Michael's double to center field, UNCG doubled its lead, 2-0.
  • With two outs, Nya South crushed a three-run homer over the left center wall, giving UNCG a 5-0 cushion. South now has 14 home runs this season.
  • The Spartans put up two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to a two-run blast from Deane, 7-0. This was her second home run of the game.
  • Brooklyn Shroyer gave up her first hit of the game in the top of the sixth and up until then the Mocs only saw six base runners.
  • Chattanooga cut the deficit to six, 7-1, in the same inning, scoring on an RBI single.
