GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team lost to The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Chattanooga Mocs, 3-2, on Sunday at UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Spartans are now 37-16 overall and 15-3 in the conference, while the Mocs are 19-27-1 overall and 7-11 in the SoCon.
- The Mocs tallied the first hit of the game in the top of the second, but Salem Ward retired the side with her first strikeout of the game with Chattanooga stranding two on base.
- The Spartans' Laney Deane and Ward walked in the bottom of the second, but Chattanooga retired the side with its own strikeout.
- With two outs and a runner on second in the top of the third, Anna Dovey walked and then Abi Bunt was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jade Gainer then hit a fielder's choice to shortstop and Segedi ended up crossing home plate on a dropped ball putting the Mocs up 1-0. Dovey was tagged out on the play on a long relay.
- UNCG responded with two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead as Deane drove the ball to the right side for UNCG's second hit of the game and Jazmin Mejia and Kaylyn Belfield scored for the advantage.
- Chattanooga tied the game in the top of the fifth on Dovey's solo home run to deep center field, 2-2.
- The Mocs then retook the lead with an RBI single to center field in the top of the sixth for a 3-2 edge.
- UNCG threatened in the bottom of the sixth, as Betsy Eatmon and Ava Talley walked before Mejia's single to center field loaded the bases. The Spartan's rally was short-lived as the Mocs' defense retired the side with a ground out.
- Following a one-two-three defensive inning in the top of the seventh, UNCG once again saw base runners after back-to-back walks to lead the frame.
- Chattanooga got the first out on a strikeout and the second was on a fielder's choice groundout, before the Mocs' Taylor Long struck out her seventh batter of the game to secure the 3-2 win.
