Softball Wins 7th SoCon Regular Season Title, Splits Twin Bill with Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team split a Saturday doubleheader with The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Samford at Samford Softball Field.
 
The Spartans defeated the Bulldogs 3-0 in game one, earning their 15th shutout of the season, which is the most since 2000 when UNCG had 19. This victory also gave the Spartans their seventh SoCon Regular Season title.
 
In game two where Samford claimed the 6-5 win, UNCG recorded 10 hits, which is the 21st time this season the Spartans have tallied double-figure base knocks.
 
The Spartans are now 38-17 overall and 16-4 in the conference, Samford is 26-28 overall and 14-6 in the SoCon.
 
GAME 1: UNCG 3 – Samford 0
 
  • The Spartans tallied the first hit of the game, as Hadley Gardner doubled in the top of the second, but Samford retired the side with back-to-back fly outs.
  • The Bulldogs had their own hit in the bottom of the frame, but Brooklyn Shroyer retired the side on a strikeout and groundout, keeping it scoreless.
  • In the top of the third with one out, Macy Michael singled to left center and Kaylyn Belfield reached on a bunt single to put Spartans on first and second.
  • Nya South then crushed a three-run homer to center field, her 16th blast of the season, giving UNCG a 3-0 lead.
  • Samford's only other hit in the game came in the bottom of the fifth, as Shroyer struck out 10 batters to match her season-best for the fourth time this year.
  • Six Spartans tallied one hit apiece in the game.

GAME 2: UNCG 5 – Samford 6
 
  • The Bulldogs tacked on five runs on four hits and one error in the bottom of the first, giving Samford an early 5-0 advantage.
  • UNCG then kept Samford scoreless for the next four innings as the Spartans chipped away at the score.
  • In the top of the second, Rylie Williams hit an RBI double that scored Avery Bouquin cutting the deficit to four, 5-1.
  • With one out, UNCG strung together three hits, including two singles and then an RBI double from Bouquin that drove in South to cut the score to 5-2.
  • Following the second out and runners still in scoring position, Williams dropped a ball into shallow left field, giving Bouquin time to score from third for a 5-3 score.
  • Michael helped the Spartans continue to chip away at the score, as she crushed her 11th home run of the season to left field in the top of the fourth to pull UNCG within one, 5-4.
  • In the top of the fifth, Michael tied the game at 5-5 with a two-out RBI single up the middle.
  • In the bottom of the frame, Olivia Shaw led off for the Bulldogs and hit a double off the wall in right field. The Spartans retired the next two batters, but Shaw was able to move into scoring position for Addison Smith's single to shortstop that gave Samford a 6-5 advantage.
  • Neither team was able to do anymore damage as the Bulldogs were able to come away with the victory.
