BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team defeated The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Samford with an 8-5 victory on Sunday afternoon at Samford Softball Field.
UNCG tallied its 22
nd game this season with double-digit hits, recording 14 in the win.
The Spartans won every SoCon series this season, accomplishing the feat for the first time since 2022.
The Spartans are now 39-17 overall and 17-4 in the conference, Samford is 26-29 overall and 14-7 in the SoCon.
- Samford got the scoring started with a solo home run in the bottom of the first for an early 1-0 lead.
- Hadley Gardner's solo blast to left field, her third homer of the season, tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second inning.
- Then, with two outs and Rylie Williams and Chrissy Rabenold on base, Macy Michael crushed a three-run blast to left field to give UNCG a 4-1 advantage. This was Michael's 12th homer of the season.
- The Bulldogs added a run in the bottom of the second on an error to put the score to 4-2.
- UNCG added three runs in the top of the third by stringing together four hits.
- First, Laney Deane sent a solo shot over the right field wall, tallying her 15th home run of the season with no outs, 5-2.
- Avery Bouquin was then hit by a pitch before scoring on Hadley Gardner's double to center field, 6-2.
- The final run of the inning came on an RBI single from Salem Ward that scored Gardner from third, 7-2.
- Following a scoreless third inning for the Bulldogs, they were able to push across a run in the bottom of the fourth off an RBI single from Olivia Shaw, 7-3.
- In the bottom of the sixth, Samford knocked in two runs off three hits and an error to bring the score to 7-5.
- Michael's sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh added another insurance run for the Spartans, making it 8-5.
- Nadia Andarowski, who came on in relief for UNCG in the sixth, held the Bulldogs to just one hit in their final effort in the seventh, securing the save in an 8-5 victory.
- Ward, in her 47th start of her career, earned her 11th victory of the season and 40th win over her four years with the Blue & Gold.
- Belfield, who went 2-for-3 at the plate in the game, surpassed 200 career hits bringing her total to 201.
