GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball was defeated in game two against The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Mercer, 9–7, at UNCG Baseball Stadium on Friday night. Brody Gardner led the way for the Spartans with three hits.
UNCG once again started the game hot with three runs in the bottom of the first. The Bears walked home a runner with the bases loaded to make it 1-0. Brantley Truitt brought home the additional two runs with a single down the right field line to make it 3-0 Spartans after one. UNCG extended its lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning after Jake Mueller knocked in two RBIs with a single.
Starter Noah Chapman pitched brilliantly until the fifth inning when the high-powered Mercer bats kicked into gear with back-to-back home runs to cut the lead to 5-3. Chapman's day ended after the sixth with five hits allowed, two walks given up and eight strikeouts. Jacob Budzik got the UNCG offense rolling again with a two-run home run in the bottom of the six, 7-3. The Bears responded in a big way in the top of the seventh, pushing across six runs capped off by a three run opposite field shot by Mercer's Eli Stephens to push the score to 9-7. The Spartans threatened a walk-off in the bottom of the ninth with two runners on with no outs. However, Mercer's closer shut the door on UNCG to bring the game to the final score of 9-7.
