GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team defeated The Southern Conference (SoCon) rival VMI, 7–6, at UNCG Baseball Stadium on Friday night. Brantley Truitt went 3-for-3 on the day as Noah Chapman once again dominated in the win.
UNCG struck first as a leadoff Truitt double put a runner in scoring position with no outs. After a productive groundout, a Jacob Dilley sacrifice fly put the Spartans up 1-0. However, the Keydets bounced back with two runs in the second and back-to-back solo shots in the third and fourth frames to push the game to 4-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth.
The Spartan offense kicked into gear as they cut the lead to 4-3 after an RBI single from Dilley and a run scoring sacrifice fly from Jacob Budzik to keep UNCG in the game. VMI extended its lead with an RBI double in the sixth inning to keep the Spartans at arm's length, 5-3. In the bottom half, UNCG got rolling with back-to-back singles from Tanner Berry and Luke Jenkins to put runners on first and second. Ethan Brittain laid down a clutch bunt that the VMI defense was unable to field properly resulting in an error and a run scoring for the Spartans, 5-4. Truitt stepped into the batter's box and delivered a clutch two RBI single that gave UNCG the lead 6-5. Jake Mueller capped off the inning with an RBI sacrifice fly to put the score at 7-5. John Horton was brought in to close out the rest of the game in the eighth, but the Keydets tagged him for one run in the frame to head into the ninth inning, 7-6. The ninth saw a leadoff walk issued by Horton, but a double play quickly brought VMI to its last out of the game which the closer retired with a strikeout to end the game, 7-6.
