Baseball Comes Up Short at Virginia Tech, 11-9

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team's comeback attempt at Virginia Tech fell short, 11-9, at English Field at Union Park on Sunday afternoon. Brantley Truitt had a career day in the batter's box going 2-for-3 with two long balls, three RBIs and four runs scored.

The Spartans got on the board early with a productive RBI groundout by Jacob Dilley in the top of the first to open the scoring, 1-0. The Hokies responded in the bottom of the second with four runs to take the lead, 4-1. UNCG battled back in the top of the third frame after a walk by Truitt and a single by Jake Mueller to put runners on first and third with no outs. Dilley then stepped up to the plate and roped a double into the left field gap for a run. After a strikeout, Luke Holland tied up the game with a two RBI double to go into the bottom of the third knotted up at four apiece.

However, the Hokies responded with a huge five run bottom of the third to bring the game to 9-4 after three. The Spartans began chipping away at the deficit in the top of the fourth with an Anthony Ruocco RBI and then a Truitt moonshot over the right field wall to cut the lead to 9-6. UNCG struck again in the top of the sixth with a Truitt two-run blast, his fourth of the season, to bring the game to within one, 9-8. However, the Hokies pushed across two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to keep the Spartans at arm's length. After two quiet innings from both teams, UNCG entered the top of the ninth down three runs. Leadoff man Dilley cut into the lead with a solo home run, his 10th of the season, to bring the score to 11-9. After two ensuing outs, the Spartans put together a rally to load the bases for pinch hitter JJ Parsons. Virginia Tech brought in closer Chase Swift to get out of the jam, and he delivered a swinging strikeout to end the game at 11-9.
