FIRST NCAA WIN! Softball Shuts Out Clemson, 1-0

ATHENS, GA. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team earned its 18th shutout this season behind a 1-0 victory over the Clemson Tigers on Friday evening at Jack Turner Stadium in Athens, Georgia.

This is the most shutouts in a season since 2000 when UNCG had 19.

This was the first NCAA Tournament win in program history for the Spartans. This is the Spartans' fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in program history and the fourth under Head Coach Janelle Breneman.

The last win for The Southern Conference (SoCon) was last year when Mercer defeated Georgia Tech, 7-3. This was the first SoCon first round win since 2002, when Chattanooga defeated Florida Atlantic, 3-0.

With the win, UNCG is now 2-3 against Clemson in program history, with the most previous win being on Feb. 18, 2020, 3-2, in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The battery of SoCon Pitcher of the Year Brooklyn Shroyer recorded her 15th complete game of the season and 48th of her career, as she earned her 22nd win of the season and 50th of her career. Her 22 wins sit eighth in UNCG single season pitching records and her 191 strikeouts sit sixth in UNCG single season records. With her six strikeouts today, she now has 604 career strikeouts. This is her 12th shutout of the season, which matches UNCG's single season shutout record of 12 set by Winn Hazelgrove in 1993.

The Spartans are now 43-17 overall and the Tigers are 32-21 overall.
  • Macy Michael put UNCG's first hit on the board with a single up the middle in the top of the first. After being moved over on a sacrifice bunt and an error, Laney Deane's RBI groundout scored Michael from third for an early 1-0 advantage.
  • Clemson tallied its first hit in the bottom of the first, but UNCG's defense assisted Shroyer to a scoreless inning.
  • The Tigers recorded a hit in each of the first four innings, until the Spartans saw their first one-two-three inning in the bottom of the fifth, which included two of Shroyer's six strikeouts of the game.
  • UNCG threatened in the top of the sixth with two runners on base by way of a Deane single up the middle and Avery Bouquin getting hit by a pitch. The Tigers retired the side with a fly out and a pop up to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of the Spartans.
  • Clemson had a hit in each of the sixth and seventh innings, but Shroyer and the Spartans were able to hold on for the 1-0 victory.
