LEXINGTON, VA. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team earned a 4-2 Southern Conference (SoCon) road victory over VMI on Sunday afternoon at Patchin Field.
The Spartans built a 3-0 first-half lead, starting in the 16th minute when
Laney Smith cut the ball around two defenders before slipping it past the Keydets' goalkeeper.
Magdalena Krug set her up as she headed the ball forward off the goalkeepers' kick, giving UNCG a 1-0 advantage.
The Blue & Gold continued pressing the VMI defense and in the 35
th minute, UNCG's
Rina Ogimoto converted a penalty kick for her second goal of the season, doubling the Spartans' lead.
Mia Hasan then blocked the goalkeeper's clearance before slotting it past for a three-goal advantage just 49 seconds later. Both teams got a shot off before the end of the half and the Spartans had the edge in shots, 7-2, and corner kicks, 2-1.
VMI came out of halftime with momentum and cut the deficit in the 51
st minute on a penalty kick by Jordan Davis. UNCG continued to generate chances, as
Summer Kaufman forced a save in the 55
th minute and
Bianca Patik struck the right post in the 71
st minute.
Less than a minute after Patik's near miss,
Cornelia Winther converted a penalty kick at 71:08 to restore the Spartans' three-goal advantage. VMI answered at 73:23 when Bailey Reid scored to make it 4-2, but UNCG's defense held firm down the stretch.
Cara Robell made a save in the 81
st minute, and the Spartans saw out the final minutes to secure the conference road win.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Smith netted the fourth goal of her career and season, bringing her total to 11 points this year.
- Krug recorded the first assist of her collegiate career and third point of her career.
- Ogimoto scored her second goal of the season, eighth of her career and fourth penalty kick goal of her career.
- Hasan registered her first collegiate goal.
- Winther tallied her first collegiate goal and penalty kick.
- UNCG outshot VMI, 12-7, including a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal.
- The Spartans earned four corner kicks, while the Keydets had three.
