2008: Finished the 2008 season with a 4-4 record and a team-high seven saves...posted a 6.23 ERA on the year in 30 appearances...served as the closer for much of the season, but made three starts in the final month...didn’t allow a run in 16 of his appearances in 2008, including a stretch of eight straight games midway through the season...struck out 54 batters in 56.1 innings of work...had his best start of the season against Wofford (5/22) when he pitched 7 innings and allowed just three runs on six hits.
2007: Ended his freshman season with a 6.91 ERA and a 2-1 record... appeared in 21 games for the Spartans with six starts... tallied a total of 43.0 innings on the mound... struck out 39 batters and allowed just 21 walks... had a season-high seven strikeouts against Duke (May 9)... faced Auburn to open the season (Feb. 16) and did not allow a hit... ranked fourth in strikeouts, and fifth in both appearances and games started... member of the 2007 Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.
Summer Ball: Played the summer of 2008 with the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod League under coach Bob Macaluso...was named the 58th top prospect by Perfect Game for his efforts.
High School: Competed in baseball for three years at Santa Teresa High School in San Jose, CA... played one year JV and two years of varsity for coach Steve Beaulieu... named to all-conference team his junior year... played his senior year at East Chapel Hill High School in Chapel Hill, NC for head coach Phil Woodell... honored as a Puma pre-season all-American... named the Wildcats Most Valuable Player... was selected all-state and All-Pac-6 Conference... saw time as pitcher, catcher and shortstop.
Personal: Robert Lawrence Gilliam... born November 29, 1987 in Manassas, VA... son of Bob and Ginny Gilliam... has a younger brother Lee... father played soccer and baseball at Hampden-Sydney College... also recruited by UNC Wilmington, The Citadel, Western Carolina and Appalachian State... majoring in political science at UNCG.
