A former player under Head Coach Billy Godwin, Hunter Allen joins the UNCG coaching staff as an Assistant Coach after getting hired in September of 2019. Prior to Greensboro, the East Carolina alum spent two years at his alma mater as a Volunteer Assistant. The Pirates hosted NCAA Regionals in back-to-back seasons with Allen in the dugout, while advancing to Super Regionals in 2019. The Shallotte, N.C. native's most recent stint at ECU was his second as a coach, spending his first year after graduation as a Student Assistant under current Pirate Head Coach Cliff Godwin.Â
The Pirates were 25th in the nation in runs scored (435) during the 2019 season, while their 71 home runs ranked 29th. Batting an average of .294 as a team, ECU collected 642 knocks overall, placing the squad first in the AAC and 14th in all of Division I baseball. The Pirates collected a .977 fielding percentage over the course of the year.
Allen tutored an outfield in 2018 that sported a .986 fielding percentage where they committed just five errors, tallied 11 outfield assists in 366 chances, posted a 44-18 overall record, claimed the AAC Tournament Title and hosted the NCAA Greenville Regional as the No. 12 national seed. Sophomore Bryant Packard was named to a program-best seven All-America teams after batting .406 (sixth in the nation, second in Division I) with 14 home runs and 50 RBI to claim the team's batting triple crown.
Allen returned to ECU after spending eight months as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Brunswick Community College. Prior to that, he served as an assistant coach and infield instructor at Louisburg College helping the Hurricanes to a 26-24 overall record in his first year as a full-time coach. Under Allen’s assistance, the Hurricane offense ranked among the league leaders in home runs (55/third), batting average (fourth) and runs (338/fourth), while sporting a .951 fielding percentage.
Serving as a student coach under Godwin in 2016, Allen helped direct a club that posted a 38-23 overall record, claimed the 2016 Charlottesville Regional crown and came one win away from making its first appearance in the College World Series.
Allen was a great player in his own right during his career in Greenville, acting as team captain in his senior year (2015) and receiving AAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player in that same season. He is a former Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Candidate, and was a NJCAA All-American during his sophomore year at Brunswick Community College.Â
Allen earned his Bachelor of Science in Recreation Park Management during his years as a student-athlete in Greenville.
