Biography

At the University of Florida

2006: Started 34 games as a sophomore in the infield (28 at second base, five at third base, one at shortstop) for Florida and batted .227 with 14 runs and seven RBI in 47 games played...named to the SEC's Academic Honor Roll for the first time...was second on the Gators with six sacrifice hits...had a .132 (7-for-53) average in 20 SEC contests with three runs and two RBI...drew 14 walks...went 1-for-4 and scored a run in the third game at Mississippi State...had an RBI single in the 8-3 victory at No. 5 Florida State...went 1-for-4 with a walk, RBI and a stolen base in the 15-4 rout of Tennessee...delivered a 2-for-4 effort and had an RBI single against North Florida...was 2-for-3 and scored twice versus USF...went 2-for-4 at UCF, giving him five hits in nine at bats (.556)...was 2-for-2 and had a career-high two RBI in the 12-6 decision over Harvard (3/11)...finished 3-for-6 (.500) versus the Crimson with five walks...turned game-ending double plays in both games against UNCG last March 7 and 8 to secure victories over the Spartans...had one of UF's five hits in the 4-0 loss to Texas A&M (3/3)...earned all-tourney honors at The Pepsi Baseball Classic with a .300 (3-for-10) clip...went a career-high 3-for-5 versus Ohio State...started two of the three games against Cincinnati at third base...Batted 2-for-6 (.333) with four runs and a pair of walks...went 2-for-2 and scored a career-high three runs in his starting debut on Feb. 10...Also walked twice.

 

2005: Appeared in 30 games during his rookie campaign...hit .364 with four hits in 11 at-bats overall...often came in as a late-inning defensive replacement for Brandon McArthur at third base...saw action in five of Florida's six games at the College World Series...walked on a 3-2 pitch from Texas All-American closer J. Brent Cox to load the bases in the eighth inning versus Texas (6/25) in a 4-2 loss to the Longhorns...made a diving stab in the ninth inning versus Tennessee in the opener of the CWS and forced Eli Iorg at second base for the second out of the frame as the Gators hung on for a 6-4 triumph...played in both NCAA Super Regional contests versus Florida State after seeing action in all three NCAA Regional games...collected his first RBI with a ground out in the eighth stanza against Notre Dame (6/5)...extended hitting streak to three games with a base-hit against Mercer (3/1)... singled up the middle against Florida A&M (2/15) for his first career hit.

 

Summer Ball: Played for the Herndon (VA) Braves of the Clark C. Griffith Collegiate Baseball League the past two years...the 2006 team was the postseason tournament champions and finished with a 27-16 overall record...hit .275 in 40 games and tied for the club lead with 20 RBIs...the 2005 club claimed the second-half division title and defeated the Vienna Senators to win the league's 60th championship...Hit .278 in 22 games with 15 runs and 12 RBIs.

 

High School: Three-year letterwinner at Northwest Guilford High School for head coach John Hughes...invited to the USA Junior Team Trials and was his school’s Athlete of the Year as a senior...selected all-area and All-Metro 4A Conference after batting .392 as a senior...represented the West squad at the North Carolina State Games...was named all-area and all-conference during his junior year after hitting .372...batted .301 as a sophomore and collected all-area honors...also played basketball and football for the Vikings...member of the Interact Club, the Key Club and the National Honor Society.

 

Personal: Matthew A. Gaski...born May 12, 1986 in Lakeland, FL...son of UNCG head baseball coach Mike and Roberta Gaski...has a younger brother Nick that attends North Carolina...also recruited by Mississippi State and Illinois...majoring in political science at UNCG.
