Cait Wetmore is entering her seventh season at UNCG.
Working primarily with the Spartan guards, Wetmore was promoted to the position of associate head coach in June of 2019.
Wetmore’s current roles with the program are overseeing the defense, designing and executing all out of bounds plays and the development of the perimeter players. She's helped three guards earn multiple All-Southern Conference Honors in her time in Greensboro: Lucy Mason, Nadine Soliman and Bailey Williams.
Wetmore was Soliman’s position coach all four years. Soliman ended her career as UNCG’s all-time leading scorer with 2,084 points, for four years. Soliman’s career culminated with her being named SoCon Player Of The Year. Overall, Soliman was named to the SoCon All-Conference team in all four years. She was the SoCon Freshman of the Year.
Soliman set a program record in games played (128) under the current staff, in addition to career field goals made (751) and three-point field goals made (222). Her 709 rebounds rank fourth in Division I program history. While under the guidance of Wetmore, Mason, who ended her career with 1,907 points, was selected to the SoCon Coaches and Media First Team All-Conference honors.
Wetmore also serves as the Spartans’ defensive coordinator.
UNCG has been one of the best teams in the Southern Conference under Wetmore. In helping UNCG win 23 games and win its first regular season conference title since 2002 during the 2019-20 season, the Spartans led the SoCon in the Spartans led the conference in field goal percentage (42.9), field goal percentage defense (36.8), free throw percentage (77.1), scoring defense (55.3), scoring margin (+8.7) and three-point field goal percentage defense (28.3).
UNCG’s scoring defense ranked 16th in the nation during the 2019-20 season.
During the 2018-19 season, the Spartans made a big improvement in defense. In one year, UNCG jumped from third in scoring defense to lead the SoCon (60.9 ppg) and were also first in rebounding defense (34.6 per game) and defensive rebounding percentage. They also climbed to rank top three in field goal percentage defense (39.7%) and three-point field goal percentage defense (30.1%).
In March 2017, she was named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Thirty Under 30 list, designating her as one of the top-30 up and coming coaches under the age of 30 in all of women's college basketball.
As UNCG’s recruiting coordinator, Wetmore recruited and signed two McDonald's All-American nominees in Alexus Willey and Mangela Ngandjui.
With the Spartans, Wetmore worked primarily with the guards including junior Lucy Mason also spent time coordinating the defense which helped UNCG to lead the SoCon in steals, mostly due to the stifling press defense. The Spartans finished the season second in turnover margin in the league as well.
Wetmore, a 2010 Adelphi University graduate and four-year member of the women's basketball team, joined UNCG after serving her alma mater as an assistant coach for two seasons.
During the 2013-14 campaign, Wetmore helped guide Adelphi to the Northeast-10 Conference championship game and a regional semifinal appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Panthers were 23-8 overall and earned a No. 1 seed in the league championship tournament.
In her first year on the sidelines, Wetmore helped the Panthers to a 15-win season; the most since the ‘06-'07 year which resulted in the program's first NE-10 post season appearance and win since joining the conference in 2009. Her responsibilities include player development, strength and conditioning, scouting opponents, practice preparation, academic advising and recruiting.
Prior to joining the staff, she served a two-year stint as a graduate assistant coach for the Columbia University women's basketball team, Wetmore earned her Master's Degree in Clinical Social Work in 2012. As a member of the Lions staff, Wetmore assisted in player development, practice and game strategies, scouting and film breakdown.
At Adelphi, Wetmore served as a two-year captain and earned the team's Mary Ann Beaudry Memorial Award for her exemplary leadership in 2009. She played on a pair of WBCA Academic Top 25 squads and was twice selected to the East Coast Conference All-Academic team.
