STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern's Mary-Kate Talbott scored her first goal of the season to lead the homestanding Eagles past UNCG, 3-2, in Southern Conference women's soccer action from Eagle Field Saturday afternoon.
"It just seems that nothing is going our way lately," said head coach Eddie Radwanski. "We started well and got an early goal, but we tend to lose concentration for parts of a match and pay the price."
In the 86th minute, Talbott took a feed from Jackie Kinsey in the left-side of the box and sent a shot past Spartan goalie Angie Rudy for the winning goal.
The Spartans (4-9-0, 1-4-0) grabbed a first-half lead in the 27th minute. Tracey Withrow (Jr./Hockessin, DE) fed Jennifer Kennedy (Sr./Summerfield, NC), who sent a blast from 30 yards out into the goal for a 1-0 Spartan lead. The goal was Kennedy's second of the season.
Georgia Southern (8-3-1, 4-1-1) evened the game less than two minutes later as Amanda Bernard recorded her eighth score of the year. After a Spartan handball, Bernard sent an indirect kick into the upper left-hand corner of the net to tie the score at 1-1.
The Eagles claimed their first lead of the game eight minutes later. Jennifer Myers fed Sarah Farrer at the top of the box, who sent the ball past a diving Rudy for her first goal of 2002.
UNCG tied the game, 2-2, at the 51:54 mark as Cara Hammond (Fr./Howell, NJ) tallied her seventh score of the season. Hammond stole the ball at midfield and outraced the Eagle defense before sending a shot past charging Georgia Southern goalie Kari Gast to even the match at 2-2.
Rudy made six saves in goal for the Spartans, while Gast recorded five for Georgia Southern. On the match, the Eagles outshot UNCG 14-9.
The Spartans have now dropped seven straight matches, including four consecutive in SoCon action.
UNCG travels to Charleston, S.C., to face the College of Charleston at 1:00 p.m. on Monday. Georgia Southern also returns to action Monday, when it hosts SoCon foe Davidson at 4:00 p.m.
