Spartans Fall To High Point, 85-72, Saturday Night

Greensboro, NC - Danny Gathings scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead High Point to an 85-72 victory over the UNC Greensboro men's basketball team Saturday night in Fleming Gymnasium.

High Point (5-3) raced out to a quick 8-0 lead just two minutes into the contest. The Panthers then stretched its lead to as many as 20, 28-8, midway through the first half. A Jerry Echenique layup at the buzzer gave the Panthers a comfortable 44-21 advantage heading into the intermission. High Point shot a sizzling 70.4% (19-of-27) from the floor in the first half.

UNCG (4-3) started the second half on a 12-2 run and cut the lead to 11, 46-35, at the 14:14 mark. High Point regrouped and once again stretched its lead back to 20, 68-48. The Spartans put together one final run, cutting the lead back to 11, 72-61, but could get no closer.

In addition to Gathings' double-double, two other Panthers reached double-figures. Zione White scored 19, while Chris Meeks added 12. High Point shot 54.4% for the game and snagged 39 rebounds compared to UNCG's 38.

Jay Joseph led four Spartans in double-figures with 20. Joseph was just 4-of-14 from the floor, but connected on 11-of-12 from the free throw line. Ronnie Burrell recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Ricky Hickman reached double-figures for the first time in his collegiate career with 10, while Ray Bristow also added 10 off the bench.

UNCG returns to action again Thursday, December 18, at Coastal Carolina. Tip-off is slated for 7 pm. High Point will take a week off before taking on the Paladins of Furman, Saturday, December 20 at 2:30 pm.
