GREENSBORO, N.C. Scott Jones scored 4:56 into sudden-death and Randi Patterson had a goal and an assist as the top-ranked UNC Greensboro men's soccer team survived a scare and defeated High Point, 3-2, in a non-conference men's soccer game Wednesday night at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
Jones, a sophomore from
Dallas, Texas, scored his fourth goal of the season off a feed from Patterson to lift the Spartans to its eight straight win over the Panthers. High Point has not beaten UNCG since 1977.
At 15-0-1, the Spartans still remain the only unbeaten team in Division I. UNCG also has the longest current unbeaten streak in Division I soccer at 16 consecutive games.
This past week, UNCG became a consensus No. 1 team for the second straight week, achieving the top spot in all four Division I men's soccer polls.
High Point (6-10-1) opened the scoring at 27:01 when freshman Gordon Smith scored unassisted from ten yards out.
UNCG answered at 39:05 when senior midfielder James Goodman scored on a blast from 25 yards out. The goal for Goodman was his sixth of the season and the 23rd of his career.
The Spartans took a 2-1 lead with 33:03 left to play on Patterson's 15th goal of the season. His goal was assisted by Egill Atlason and Matt Smith.
The Panthers answered scoring just under two minutes later when sophomore Chris Archer scored unassisted off a misplayed ball by a Spartan defender.
Jay Benfield earned the win in net for the Spartans recording two saves, while Panther netminder Chris Michener stopped six shots.
The Spartans travel to Charleston, S.C. to take on College of Charleston on Saturday at 6 p.m. for the Southern Conference regular season championship. The Cougars tied Georgia Southern, 2-2, at home on Wednesday to move into a tie for first place with the Spartans at 5-0-1. High Point will tangle with Birmingham-Southern on Sunday at 2 p.m. in High Point.
