ELON, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team drew Elon 0-0 at Rudd Field on Tuesday night. The Spartans dominated possession and out shot the Phoenix 14-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The match started off slow for both teams as neither team took the first shot until the 14th minute. As the game settled down, UNCG had a clear advantage in possession, but the tough Elon defense held the explosive Spartan offense at bay, allowing just three shots in the first half. But the stout Elon keeper held his ground to keep the score 0-0 at halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Phoenix began to flex some offensive muscle but Seth Wilson and the UNCG defense held firm. The UNCG defense only allowed two shots in the second half with one shot being blocked and the other in the 88th minute was saved by Wilson to keep Elon off the scoresheet. However, with 11 shots taken in the second half the UNCG offense was unable to find the game-winner to end the match at a 0-0 draw.
"Good performance overall tonight. The guys had a great mentality and had good intensity tonight," said Head Coach Chris Rich. "We felt like we were in control for most of the game, created some good chances, and defended well. Unfortunately, we weren't the sharpest in front of goal tonight, so the goal never came. But credit to Elon, they defended well and were hard to break down. But it was a positive sign to get the clean sheet tonight as that was goal. Now time to shift our focus and prepare for our conference opener this weekend."
