CHARLESTON, SC – Rakel Logadottir scored twice and Amy Carnell had a goal and an assist as UNC Greensboro claimed its first outright Southern Conference women's soccer regular season crown since 1998 with a convincing 7-0 win over The Citadel on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, UNCG claimed its fourth-ever regular season title. UNCG also won the regular season crown outright in 1997 and 1998. The Spartans shared the regular season title with Furman and Western Carolina in 2001. The Spartans also grabbed the No. 1 seed in the Southern Conference Women's Soccer Tournament, which gets underway Thursday at UNCG Soccer Stadium. UNCG is also unbeaten in its last 15 games at UNCG Soccer Stadium against Southern Conference competition, dating back to the 2002 season.
On Sunday against The Citadel, Karla Davis got the scoring started at the 11:46 mark. Davis, a throw-in specialist for the Spartans, threw the ball from the sideline towards a crowd in the box. The ball was controlled by Bulldog goalkeeper Angie Ellenwood, but not before the ball crossed the goal line, crediting Davis with her first collegiate goal and giving UNCG a 1-0 lead.
UNCG made it 2-0 just over six minutes later when Jamie Ableman scored her second goal of the season and second in as many games with help from Carnell and Nicollette DeLaine. Carnell, a junior from Lake Stevens, WA, made it 3-0 at 25:06 with her team-leading 11th goal of the season to cap the first half scoring.
