Softball Earns Two Victories On Day One Of The Seahawk Classic #$%^ #$%^

Jennifer Hubbard

Wilmington, NC – The UNC Greensboro softball team remained unbeaten on the season, picking up two victories Friday afternoon at the 2004 Seahawk Classic hosted by UNC Wilmington. The Spartans picked up wins over Winthrop, 5-3, and Delaware State, 6-1, pushing their record to 5-0 on the year.

In game one, UNCG received a stellar pitching performance from Danielle Byrne to down Winthrop. Byrne combined with teammate Lynsi Pierce, who earned her first save, to scatter 11 hits and allow just three runs. The win was Byrne's second on the season.

Offensively, 2003 SoCon Player of the Year Jennifer Hubbard carried much of the offensive load going 3-for-4 from the plate. Two of Hubbard's three hits went for extra bases and she also recorded two stolen bases. Kelly Allen also notched a multi-hit game for the Spartans going 2-for-4.

In game two versus Delaware State, Lynsi Pierce was dominant on the mound in earning her second victory on the season. Pierce in her second start as a Spartans stuck out 11 Hornets en route to the victory.

The UNCG offense proved to be just as effective against Delaware State as it had been earlier in the day. Hubbard served as the catalyst for the Spartans going 2-for-4, while Jennifer Bonilla tallied four hits and two doubles. Allen did most of the damage for the Spartans, belting two home runs, while driving in three.

UNCG will continue action from the 2004 Seahawk Classic on Saturday.
