Softball Goes 2-0 On Day One Of Charleston Southern Invitational

UNCG-Boston College Box Score UNCG-IPFW Box Score

Kara Clouser

Charleston, S.C. - After a full day and a half of delays due to inclement weather and unplayable field conditions, the UNC Greensboro softball team finally saw action, Saturday, in the Charleston Southern Hampton Inn/Quality Suites Softball Invitational. The Spartans downed Boston College, 2-0, in their opening game before rolling past IPFW, 8-3.

Boston College threatened in the fifth with a lead-off single by Erin Mackey that was squandered. UNC Greensboro (9-1), however, did not squander its half of the same inning, scoring two runs on a two-RBI single by Kara Clouser. The Spartan scoring drive was aided by an Eagle error, wild pitch, and passed ball.

The two run lead would prove to be enough, as freshman Vanessa Oakes shut down the Eagle offense. Oakes tossed all seven innings, allowing just two hits while striking out two.

In game two, Lynsi Pierce picked up the victory over IPFW with a strong pitching performance, while Danielle Byrne earned the save. Vanessa Massie highlighted the offensive with three hits, including a home run. Jennifer Bonilla recorded three doubles and Kelly Allen chipped in with one hit.

UNCG will close out play from the Charleston Southern Invitational Sunday.
