Marietta, GA – The UNC Greensboro softball team opened the 2004 Georgia Tech Buzz Classic, Friday, with a pair of loses. The Spartans were defeated by UConn, 8-2, before falling to Coastal Carolina, 6-4, in the nightcap.

The losses move UNCG to 16-10 overall on the year.

Both teams scored a lone run in their first at bat, with UConn scoring on a RBI single by Maggie Arbogast, and UNCG scoring on a RBI single by Jennifer Bonilla.

UConn then broke open the game with four runs in the second before tacking on single runs in the fifth through seventh innings, capitalizing on six Spartan miscues. UNCG would score their second run of the game in the third inning on a RBI single by Jennifer Hubbard, but the Spartans would be held scoreless over the remainder of the game.

Lynsi Pierce was saddled with the loss for UNCG despite going all seven innings and allowing just three earned runs, while striking out three.

Offensively, Christina Montana went 1-for-3 with two runs scored, while Danielle Byrne and Joni Gomez each tallied hits.

In game two, Coastal Carolina opened up an early advantage posting five runs in the opening frame. The Spartans rallied to score in the second, fifth and seventh innings, but is was not enough as CCU managed to hold on for the victory, 6-4. Brittany Nelson picked up the win to improve to 3-6 on the season.

The Spartans will continue action from the Buzz Classic, Saturday, with games against Miami (OH) and UNC Wilmington.
