UNCG-Furman Game One UNCG-Furman Game Two
Greensboro, NC- Jennifer Bonilla's walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning propelled the UNC Greensboro softball team to a 4-3 victory over Furman in game one of a Southern Conference doubleheader, Saturday afternoon, at Campus Field. Furman, however, rebounded to down the Spartans 9-5 in game two.
In game one, Furman struck first scoring one run in the first inning on a Megan Jaudon triple down the right field line, scoring LaKerah Barr. The Lady Paladins struck again in the third when Kristin White scored on a sacrifice bunt by JoDee Eichelberger.
Following a Danielle Byrne solo home run in the fourth inning, Furman tacked on a single run in the top of the sixth inning and held a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, Danielle Byrne opened the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a single to right field by Jennifer Hubbard. Christina Montana followed with another Spartans walk to load the bases. With the bases loaded Joni Gomez was hit by a pitch to pull UNCG within one, 3-2. Jennifer Bonilla then blasted a single up the middle, driving in both the tying and winning runs to give the Spartan their first conference win of the season.
Hubbard paced the Spartan offense going 2-for-3 with one run scored., while Bonilla went 1-for-4 with two runs batted in. Byrne picked up the win to move to 6-3 on year. The sophomore tossed all seven inning, allowing three earned runs on five hits, while striking out five.
LaKerah Barr went 1-for-3 with one run scored for the Lady Paladins. Rachel Henley was saddled with the loss despite allowing only one earned and seven hits in 6.2 innings of work.
In game two, Furman (6-29, 1-1 SoCon) pounded out nine runs on 14 hits to down UNCG, 9-5. Kristy Goodrich would toss the final four innings of the contest to earn the win, as the Lady Paladins held off a late Spartan rally to pick up their first SoCon victory of the season.
UNCG (20-12, 1-1 SoCon) jumped on the board early with a pair of runs in the first inning. Hubbard opened the bottom of the first with a single and then advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by Christina Montana. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Hubbard scored on an RBI single by Gomez. Adrianne Audley then plated Gomez with a single down the right field line.
The Lady Paladins would answer with three runs in the top of the second, as they outscored UNCG 9-3 heading into the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Kara Clouser ledoff with a single and Jennifer Hubbard followed with a home run to center field, but it was not enough as Furman cruised to the victory.
Lynsi Pierce went 3-for-3 to lead the Spartan offense, while Hubbard, Audley and Gomez each registered a multi-hit game.
LaKerah Barr posted a 4-for-5 effort for Furman. Megan Jaudon added two hits and two runs batted in.
UNCG and Furman will conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 1 pm.
