UNCG-A&T Game One UNCG-A&T Game Two

Vanessa Massie

Greensboro, NC - The UNC Greensboro softball team combined for 20 runs on 20 hits in a nonconference doubleheader sweep over North Carolina A&T, Tuesday afternoon, at Campus Field. The Spartans took game one, 8-0, before defeating the Lady Aggies in game two, 12-4.

In game two, the Spartans (26-22) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning, capitalizing on four A&T errors. Jennifer Hubbard reached on an error to open the inning and advanced to second on a bunt single by Christina Montana. Joni Gomez then drove in both runners with a monstrous home run to left field.

After tacking on two more runs in the first inning, UNCG exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the third on eight hits, including three home runs. Adriane Audley singled to open the frame and then scored on a Vanessa Massie home run to straight away center field. Following a Kara Clouser walk, Heather Branche connected on his first collegiate home run making the score 9-0. Hubbard made it back-to-back shots for UNCG with her ninth home run of the year, as the Spartans returned to the top of the order. Jennifer Bonilla would cap the inning with a RBI single, scoring Gomez, to put UNCG ahead 12-0.

A&T (16-36) would rally for four runs in the top of the fifth. Tabitha Veney drove in the first Lady Aggie run of the day with a RBI single, before Shermain Murphy connected on a three-run home run, scoring Veney and Crystal Taylor. A&T would get no closer, however, as Montana, pitching in her first collegiate game, induced a ground ball from Lorraine Geiger to end the game.

Vanessa Oakes tossed four scoreless innings for the victory, allowing just three hits. Joni Gomez paced the offense with a 3-for-3 effort, driving in three. In all, eight of UNCG's nine starters tallied hits.

Crystal Taylor went 2-for-2 to lead the Lady Aggies, while Adia Dial took the loss on the mound, giving up six earned runs in 2.1 innings of work.

In game one, UNCG received a complete game shutout from Danielle Byrne and a 2-for-3 effort from Jennifer Bonilla en route to the 8-0 victory.

The Spartans surged out to an early lead, scoring five runs in the first inning. With the bases loaded, Adriane Audley connected on a double to left center, plating Gomez and Montana. A Danielle Byrne triple would score Audley and pinch runner Adrienne Law before Vanessa Massie capped the inning with a RBI single.

UNCG would strike again with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Following back-to-back walks to Hubbard and Montana, Jennifer Bonilla blasted a three-run home run to left field putting the game out of reach.

Byrne worked all five innings for UNCG, allowing three hits, while striking out two. Offensively, Audley and Byrne each posted one hit and two runs batted in.

Shermain Murphey, Sofi Loftin and Christina Brock each tallied hits for the Lady Aggies, while LaTronda Anderson was saddled with the loss.
