Spartans Edge Georgia Southern 2-1

UNCG-GSU Box Score

Kelly Allen

Greensboro, NC - Vanessa Oakes tossed a complete game five hitter, allowing just one earned run, as the UNC Greensboro softball team edged Georgia Southern, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Campus Field. With the win, UNCG improves to 29-24 overall and 7-8 in the Southern Conference, while also capturing two games in the three-game series against the Eagles.

Oakes and Georgia Southern's Logan Free locked into a pitcher's dual during the early stages of the contest. The Eagles were the first team to break into the scoring column in the fourth inning with one run on two hits. Kim Griffin opened the frame with a bunt single and advanced to third on a double by Maria Laurato. Griffin then stole home, after being caught in a rundown, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

UNCG responded in the bottom of the fourth with two runs to take the lead. Jennifer Hubbard walked to open the scoring rally before advancing to second on a Joni Gomez single. After Hubbard was picked off of second, Jennifer Bonilla walked, moving Gomez to second. Gomez would then score on a throwing error by Free as she tried to retire Kelly Allen on a grounder. Free's throw sailed over the first baseman's head, allowing the run to score from second base. UNCG would continue their offensive pressure in the inning loading the bases on a fielder's choice and a walk, pushing Allen to third. With the bases loaded, Kara Clouser was hit by a pitch, scoring Allen.

Oakes would take care of the rest, allowing just two hits over the final three innings to seal the victory. The win was Oakes' 12th on the season.

Offensively, Gomez posted two of UNCG's three hits, while scoring one run. Allen posted a 1-for-3 effort with one run scored.

Free took the loss for Georgia Southern, allowing no earned runs on three hits, while striking out eight. Laurato paced the Eagle offense with two hits.

UNCG will return to action on Saturday, May 1, with a doubleheader against College of Charleston. The Eagles will next face East Tennessee State in a three-game series beginning May 1.
