Spartans Drop Doubleheader At Chattanooga

UNCG-Chattanooga Game 1 UNCG-Chattanooga Game 2

Vanessa Oakes

Chattanooga, TN - Lacey Swarthout pitched a no-hitter and Brittney Whittier picked up another shutout as Chattanooga swept a Southern Conference softball doubleheader from UNC Greensboro 7-0 and 8-0 Saturday afternoon at Frost Stadium.

Chattanooga (28-20 overall, 4-1 SoCon) tallied 17 hits in the two games, led by Teri Herbert, who was 3-for-3 in the second game and 4-for-7 with two RBIs on the afternoon. Jeannie Cochran finished the day 3-for-6, Bryn Favor was 2-for-4 in the doubleheader with three RBIs, Whitter went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and Grace Pickett drove in three runs.

In the opening game, Herbert's third-inning single drove in Whittier, who had doubled, to put UTC on the board. The Lady Mocs struck for four runs in the fourth with Favor's bases-loaded triple being the big blow. Cochran followed with a run-scoring single. Pickett added an RBI off a grounder in the fifth.

Swarthout had nine strikeouts and no walks for just the 17th no-hitter in UTC history. Danielle Byrne took the loss for the Spartans (20-15, 1-4) tossing all six innings, giving up seven earned runs and striking out three.

Whitter was equally impressive in the second game with three strikeouts and no walks in five innings of work.

UTC got a single run in the third on Herbert's double, which chased home Favor, who had singled and moved to second on Cochran's sacrifice. The Lady Mocs ended the game with a seven-run fifth. Melissa Ramirez' two-run double started the onslaught, while Robyn Johnson and Pickett both added two-run singles. A RBI single by Whitter ended the game.

Christinia Montana went 1-for-1 to lead the Spartans offensively, while Vanessa Oakes took the loss giving up seven earned runs on nine hits.

Chattanooga and UNCG complete their series Sunday afternoon with a 2 o'clock single-game date at Frost Stadium.
