Spartans Fall To Appalachian State, 13-3, On Day Two #$%^Of The 2004 SoCon Tournament

Chattanooga, TN - After an opening round loss to Elon on Thursday, the UNC Greensboro softball team fell to #8 seed Appalachian State, 13-3, Friday morning on day two of action from the 2004 Southern Conference Softball Tournament at Frost Stadium. With the win, ASU advances to play Saturday, while the Spartans are eliminated from competition and finish the season with a 30-30 mark.

UNCG jumped on the board in the top of the first with a single run. With two outs in the frame, Kelly Allen walked and advanced to second on a single by Jennifer Bonilla. Adriane Audley followed with a single to right field, loading the bases for Vanessa Massie. Massie drew a walk from Mountaineer pitcher Jennifer Hurley to put the Spartans on the scoreboard.

After Appalachian State posted a single run in the second inning, Kara Clouser delivered a solo home run to put UNCG back out in front 2-1.

ASU took their first lead of the game in the top of the third inning, scoring two runs on one hit and one error. Wendy Lewis reached on a Spartan fielding error to open the inning. Lewis then stole second and advanced to third on a ground out by Candace Shelton. Following a hit batsmen, Lindsay Glover delivered a two-run single, scoring Lewis and Amber Handy.

The Mountaineers would go on to score 10 runs over the final three innings to pull out to a double-digit lead. Trailing 13-2, UNCG attempted to claw back into the contest in the bottom of the sixth. Christina Montana reached on a fielder's choice to open a scoring rally. Montana then advanced to third on a single by Hubbard before scoring on an Appalachian State throwing error. The Spartans, however, were unable to push across any more runs as ASU held on for the victory.

The Spartans were led by Clouser who went 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI. Christina Montana went 1-for-2 with one run scored, while Hubbard, Bonilla and Audley each tallied one hit. Danielle Byrne took the loss for UNCG, allowing five earned runs in five innings, striking out four.

Jordan Arnold earned the win in three innings of relief, allowing just one run on two hits. Offensively, Glover pace ASU with two hits and four runs batted in.
