Spartans Drop Two At College Of Charleston

Charleston, SC - The UNC Greensboro softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against College of Charleston, Sunday afternoon, in Southern Conference action from Patriots Point. The Cougars took the first game 6-3 before downing the Spartans 5-1 in game two.

The Cougars improve to 37-21 overall and 11-6 in Southern Conference play. The Spartans fall to 29-26 overall and 7-10 in conference action.

In the first game, UNCG jumped out to an early 2-0 lead by scoring single runs in the first two innings. Joni Gomez reached on a walk in the first inning, eventually scoring on an error by the Cougar defense in the first frame. In the second inning, Vanessa Massie opened a scoring rally by being hit by a pitch. Massie advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Christina Montana before scoring on a RBI single by Jennifer Hubbard.

With the score tied at two in entering the bottom of the sixth the Cougars scored four runs to close out the game. Katie Ballard got the big hit of the inning with a two run single up the middle plating Amanda Cone and Jacquie Rothey. The next batter, Darcy Johnson hit a liner to the right centerfield wall knocking in Stephanie Ballard and Bridget Loudermilk. Rachael Stern pitched seven innings giving up only five hits to improve to 19-9 this season. Danielle Byrne gave up all six Cougar runs and falls to 11-10.

The Cougars completed the sweep by scoring four runs in the bottom of the first in the second game. Leshe Russell scored the first run of the game on an error by the Spartans shortstop. Darcey Johnson doubled down the right field line to knock in three Cougars. Natalie Smith pitched the complete game giving up one run to improve to 12-8 on the season. Vanessa Oakes also recorded the complete game but falls to 12-12. 
 

UNCG scored its lone run of game two in the second inning on an RBI single by Jennifer Hubbard, scoring Kara Clouser. Jennifer Bonilla paced the Spartan offensive attack with three hits, while Joni Gomez chipped in with two.

UNCG will conclude the regular season next weekend, as the Spartans host Elon in a three game set beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 8.
