Spartans Fall To Elon, 6-0, In Regular Season Finale

Greensboro, NC - In the final game of the 2004 regular season, the UNC Greensboro softball team fell to Elon, 6-0, Sunday afternoon at Campus Field. With the loss, the Spartans move to 30-28 overall and 8-12 in Southern Conference play.

Elon (31-21-1, 11-10 SoCon) jumped on the board with two runs in the second inning. Megan Borgaard was hit by a pitch to open the inning before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Meredith Miley. Jen Massey then plated Borgaard with a single. Massey would later score on a single by Paige Goss.

After posting a single run in the third inning, the Phoenix struck again in the fifth inning with two runs on three hits. Jenny Gustin opened the frame with a single down the left field line. Jaime Dupont then delivered a two run home run to left field making the score 5-0.

Trailing 6-0, UNCG rallied to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Kara Clouser ripped a single past the Elon shortstop to keep the Spartans alive. Clouser then advanced to second on a single to left center by Christina Montana. A walk by Jennifer Hubbard loaded the bases for Joni Gomez, but Elon pitcher Meredith Gay retired the senior on a deep fly ball to center field, ending the game.

Jennifer Bonilla went 2-for-3 to lead UNCG offensively. Vanessa Massie, Clouser and Montana also chipped in with one hit apiece. Danielle Byrne took the loss, giving up five earned runs on 10 hits in seven innings of work.

Gay earned the win for Elon, tossing a complete game five-hit shutout, striking out six. Dupont paced the Phoenix offense with one hit and three runs batted in, while Gustin went 3-for-4 with one run scored.

The two teams will return to action on Thursday, May 13, in the opening round of the 2004 Southern Conference Softball Tournament.
