WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The UNC Greensboro women's soccer team dropped its first contest of the season, falling to Wake Forest, 3-2, Monday evening at Spry Stadium. Wake Forest improves its record to 1-0-1 on the season while the Spartans even their mark at 1-1.
The Demon Deacons opened the game's scoring when Sarah Kozey notched her second goal of the season,when her shot from 30 yards out squeezed into the top right corner of the net. Kozey's goal, which was scored at the 3:57 mark, was assisted by Melanie Schneider.
UNCG responded when senior forward Rakel Logadottir scored on a free kick from sophomore defender Shannon Donovan. The goal for Logadottir, which came at the 24:40 mark, was her 20th of her career.
Wake Forest retook the lead at the 57:16 mark on a goal from Schneider. Her goal was assisted by Kozey and Taylor Toombs. Just two minutes later, Elizabeth Remy extended the Demon Deacon lead when she capitalized on a misplayed ball by a Spartan defender at 59:30.
UNCG freshman Mary Kate Towne scored the final goal of the evening at the 70:32 mark off a pass from Logadottir. Towne's goal was the first in her career.
"We anticipated Wake to come out with a lot of intensity, being their home opener," said head coach Eddie Radwanski. "We made some mistakes tonight and good teams like Wake Forest will make you pay."
The Spartans return to action this weekend for the OSU/Nike Invitational in Corvallis, OR. UNCG will take on Fresno State, Friday, Sept. 3, at 5:30 EST, then will face the host school, Oregon State, Sunday, Sept. 5, at 4 pm.
