DAVIDSON, NC – Sophomore forward Randi Patterson scored a pair of goals, while senior midfielder James Goodman recorded a goal and assist, as the No. 7 UNC Greensboro men's soccer team (3-0) defeated No. 21 UAB, 4-2, Friday evening in game one of the Davidson/adidas Classic at Richardson Stadium.
This is the third consecutive win for the Spartans over a nationally-ranked foe this season.
UAB opened the scoring in the 16th minute as forward Jerson Monteiro took a pass from midfielder Leandro de Oliveira and connected to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead.
UNCG answered early in the second half as Patterson took a pass from Goodman in the middle of the box and drilled it in the net from 10 yards out. Patterson's first goal of the evening came at 48:11. The Spartans took the lead at 2-1, a little under four minutes later when junior forward Egill Atlason netted a corner kick from senior midfielder Jeff Lochrie. Atlason's goal, his first of the season came at 52:08.
The Blazers tied the game up at 2-2 when forward Marcus Hughes received a pass in the center from Rogerio Oliveira and scored. The goal for Hughes was his first of the season.
Goodman successfully converted a penalty kick at 75:35 to give the Spartans the lead for good at 3-2. Patterson added a goal for UNCG less then a minute later when he hammered in a shot off a cross from Adrian Worthen.
The Spartans outshot UAB, 19-9, for the game, including 10-3, in the second half of play.
UNCG netminder Jay Benfield recorded three saves, while UAB keeper A.J. Robles stopped four shots.
UNCG will face Vanderbilt on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 1 pm. in game three of the Davidson/adidas Classic.
