GREENSBORO, NC The UNC Greensboro women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to in-state rival and 10th-ranked Wake Forest Friday evening at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. With the win, Wake Forest improved to 5-1-1, while the Spartans fell to 3-3 on the season.
The Spartans controlled the ball and possession for the majority of the first half, resulting in just five shots for the visiting Demon Deacons. Despite only producing a handful of first half shots, Wake Forest struck first in the opening period to gain the early 1-0 advantage.
Wake midfielder Sarah Kozey dribbled down the left side of the field and sent a cross into the Spartans box where a flurry of players made an attempt at the ball. As the ball began its plummet down towards the field of play, it ricocheted off a UNCG defender towards the Spartans goal. Senior keeper Jennifer Stillman made a diving effort to swat the ball back into the field of play, only to have the ball sneak just past the goal line just before her outstretched hand could slap it out of harms way. Prior to the goal, Stillman had gone just under 211 minutes without surrendering a goal.
With just minutes to play in the second half, senior Dacia Beachum nearly netted the equalizer in the 89th minute. After receiving a pass from her sister Deven, Dacia Beachum fired a shot at the Wake Forest goal from just inside the Deacons' 18. Wake keeper Kaitlyn Doe, however, corralled the ball for her fourth save of the night, preserving the 1-0 win for the Demon Deacons.
“It was a very good game tonight,” head coach Eddie Radwanski said. “We started the match very strong and we were unlucky not to get a goal, but it was two very good teams going at it. Lady luck didn't bounce our way with the own goal, but our kids kept competing.”
UNCG takes to the road for the first time since late August when the Spartans travel to Blacksburg to take on Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon at 4 pm. The Spartans own a 2-1 all-time record against the Hokies and are undefeated on the Virginia Tech campus.
