CHARLESTON, SC The UNC Greensboro women's volleyball team rolled to its fourth straight victory Friday night with a 3-0 sweep of The Citadel in Southern Conference action at Macallister Fieldhouse. UNCG won by scores of 30-24, 30-28 and 30-16.
Senior Theresa Hart had a team-leading 16 kills to lead UNCG (15-7, 5-4 SoCon). Sophomore Kaitlyn Nortz recorded the most efficient hitting percentage by a Spartan player this year with an incredible .684 percentage. The Westerville, OH native had 14 kills and only one attack error in 19 attempts and also had five total blocks against the Bulldogs.
Freshman Branagan Fuller had 12 kills on a .429 hitting percentage. Freshman Lisa Fawell handed out 47 assists. Classmate Catherine Hanners had 17 digs, while Hart came up with 11 digs.
Samantha Parisi led The Citadel (6-15, 1-8 SoCon) with 10 kills. Emily Hill had 23 assists and Ashley Winter had a team-leading 10 digs as the Bulldogs had their two match winning streak stopped by the Spartans.
UNCG, which notched its seventh 3-0 victory of the year, hit .293 as a team, while the Bulldogs struggled by hitting only .103.
The Citadel and UNCG were neck and neck in the first set with five ties in the game, but three aces by Spartan servers in the final 10 points sealed the game victory for the Spartans. Nortz led the way in the game with six kills while Parisi and Rachel Sanders each had four kills for the Bulldogs.
UNCG jumped out to a quick lead in the second game with a 17-7 edge. The Citadel, despite only playing six players and a libero in the entire match, rallied back and came within one point at the 29-28 mark off a Hanners service error. However, Fuller put down a kill to end the Bulldog rally and close the game at 30-28.
In game three, the Spartans led by as much as 14 at the 21-7 mark and continued on for the 30-16 game three win. The Citadel's offense stalled as the Bulldogs hit -.028 in the game while UNCG's offense rolled with a .364 hitting percentage.
UNCG stays in Charleston to take on first place College of Charleston at John Kresse Arena on Saturday afternoon at 2 pm.
