Spartans down The Citadel 6-0 in SoCon action

Box Score

CHARLESTON, SC Freshman Jennifer Bronson scored two goals in UNC Greensboro's 6-0 victory over The Citadel in Southern Conference women's soccer action on a soggy Friday afternoon.

The Spartans got on the board early in the seventh minute of play when sophomore Heather Mitrisin scored her first goal of the season off a rebound from a shot taken by freshman Kelly Attayek.

Bronson scored UNCG's second goal at the 33:34 minute mark. The Raleigh, NC native fired a shot right above keeper Brit Bunnell's hands from 10 yards out. Less than two minutes later, senior Shannon Donovan scored the Spartans final goal of the half and her fifth of the year. Donovan took a pass from fellow senior Jessie Jay and blasted a shot to the bottom left corner of the net to give UNCG the 3-0 lead going into half.

UNCG grabbed a 4-0 lead early in the second half on Bronson's second goal of the night and fourth of the season. Bronson connected on a pass from senior Carolyn Lindsay and sent it into the back of the net past Bunnell. Sophomore Amanda Olson scored her first goal of the year just two minutes later off a feed from fellow sophomore Becca Voss to give UNCG the 5-0 lead.

Lindsay capped off the scoring when she netted her first goal of the season in the 58th minute from 15 yards out off a pass from freshman Leigh Riordon. The Spartans outshot the Bulldogs 26-5 and finished with nine corner kicks to The Citadel's one.

UNCG, the Southern Conference regular season champions and No. 1 seed in next week's SoCon Tourney, improved to 8-0-1 in conference play and 9-7-2 overall. The Spartans will play one more regular season game against College of Charleston on Sunday afternoon at Charleston. Game time is set for 1 pm.

UNCG will face either Elon or Wofford in the first round of the SoCon Tournament on Tuesday night. The teams enter play on Sunday in a deadlock at 10 points after Elon lost to Davidson and Wofford beat Georgia Southern on Friday. Elon holds the tie-breaker advantage between the two.
