DAVIDSON, NC Liz Williamson had 17 kills and nine digs to lead Davidson to a three-game sweep of UNC Greensboro, 30-24, 30-23 and 30-21, in Southern Conference volleyball action Friday night.
Davidson also got 12 kills from Kittery Neale as the Wildcats raised their record to 16-12 overall and 8-5 in Southern Conference action. UNCG, which fell to 17-10 overall and 7-7 in SoCon play, got six kills from Branagan Fuller and five kills each from Teresa Hart, Lauren Keiser and Liz Benzschawel.
UNCG played from behind nearly all night long. The Wildcats jumped out to an 8-3 lead early in the first match. After Davidson extended the lead to 11 at 19-8, the Spartans put together a rally. Following a timeout, the Spartans went on a 9-4 run to pull to within 26-22. However, Davidson held on for the 30-24 win.
The Spartans fell behind again early in the second game, 5-1, before rallying to tie the game, 6-6, on a service ace by Kayleigh Knerr. However, Davidson scored seven of the next nine points to regain control. UNCG again got back to within four late, pulling to within 24-20 on a kill by Benzschawel. But that was close as they would get.
In the third game, UNCG grabbed an early lead, 5-4, after a Catherine Hanners kill. However, after the score was tied, 8-8, Davidson scored nine of the next 12 to open up a six-point lead on its way to the three-game sweep.
UNCG will return to action on Saturday night against Appalachian State in Boone beginning at 7:30 pm.
