DAVIDSON, NC – Brendan Winters scored 18 points in the first 15 minutes on his way to a 24-point night as Davidson defeated UNC Greensboro, 92-73, in Southern Conference men's basketball action at Belk Arena on Wednesday night.
Freshman David McClenny led UNCG with a career-high 20 points. The Raleigh, NC native knocked down 7-of-11 from the floor to shatter his previous career high of nine points.
Sophomore forward Kyle Hines added 18 points for UNCG, his 14th consecutive game scoring in double figures. Junior guard Ricky Hickman also chipped in with 17 points for the Spartans to extend his double-figure scoring streak. The streak, now at 22 straight games, is the second-longest in school history. The Kernersville, NC native surpassed the 400-point mark for the season and needs nine points for 1,000 in his career.
Davidson (14-8, 7-3 SoCon) also got 16 points from Ian Johnson and 14 points off the bench from Jason Morton. The Wildcats, who moved back into a tie for first in the South Division, shot 56 percent from the floor on the night and knocked down 11-of-20 from three-point range.
“Davidson was good tonight,” said UNCG coach Mike Dement. “They were efficient and we weren't aggressive defensively. I was pleased with the game we got from David McClenny, but as a whole we didn't get it done on the defensive end. We are a totally different team on the road defensively right now than what we are at home and hopefully we can get it back together.”
The Wildcats, the top scoring team in the SoCon at 79.0 points per game, jumped out to a 19-9 lead in the first five minutes of the contest. Davidson, which had a 19-game homecourt winning streak snapped with a loss to Western Carolina on Saturday, showed no hangover effects as it knocked down six of eight from the floor.
UNCG stopped the bleeding for a while, using a quick 5-0 spurt to get the margin back to 10 at 26-16. But Davidson answered with a 10-2 run, sparked by two three-pointers by Winters, to open the margin back up to 18 and force UNCG to call a timeout.
The Spartans (11-13, 4-6) were able to hold Winters in check for the last five minutes of the half, but went to the locker room trailing, 46-31.
UNCG, which rallied from a 13-point halftime deficit on Saturday night against Furman, had any hopes of a repeat comeback dashed early in the second half. Davidson went on a 16-4 run to open up its biggest lead of the night to that point, 62-35.
UNCG, which has now lost eight in a row on the road, returns home to face Chattanooga on Saturday at 7 pm.
SIDELINES: Hickman knocked down a 3-pointer with 5:16 left in the second half from the left wing to extend his string of consecutive games with a 3-pointer to 20 straight. He missed on his first five attempts before keeping the streak alive... UNCG has now lost four in a row at Davidson... Davidson has won 62 of its last 70 at Belk Arena... Kyle Hines' 14-game double-figure scoring streak is tied for the ninth-longest in school history... The Wildcats shot 51.7 percent (15-for-29) from the floor (including 6-for-10 from three-point range) and 10-for-11 from the line in the first half to open up their big lead. On the 15 first half field goals, Davidson had 13 assists... Hines had three blocks to raise his career total to 172. He is already 10th on the UNCG all-time list... Kevin Oleksiak had his double-digit scoring streak snapped at nine straight games.
