WILLIAMSBURG, VA – UNC Greensboro scored the first goal of the contest but was unable to hold the lead as William & Mary scored the matches final three goals to claim a 3-1 win on Friday night.
Jessica Patterson put the Spartans on the scoreboard first. The junior midfielder netted the unassisted goal in the 20th minute. It was Patterson's first goal of the season.
W&M answered back ten minutes later. Forward Claire Zimmeck scored the Tribe's first goal off a feed from Katie Hogwood. The two teams went into the half with a 1-1 tie.
The Tribe came out strong in the second half. Danielle Collins scored W&M's second goal in the 49th minute from Tiffany Chudoba. Then, after eight minutes of play, the Tribe got their final goal from Emily Kittleson. W&M went up 3-1 and held the lead for good.
“We played very good in the first half,” quoted UNCG's head coach Eddie Radwanski, “But in the second, we came out flat. We finished up the game strong but the difference was in the first 10 minutes of the second half.”
W&M outshot UNCG 20-9, including a 13-5 shot advantage in the second half. The Tribe also led in the corner kick category, 6-2.
The Spartans' goalkeeper, Katherine Ryan, recorded four saves in 90 minutes of play. Patterson had four shots for UNCG and Kelly Attayek added three shots.
UNCG travels to Chapel Hill on Tuesday to face the nationally ranked North Carolina Tar Heels. Kickoff is set for 7 pm.
