Patterson hits milestone, Richardson lifts UNCG to win

Box Score

GREENSBORO, NCRandi Patterson scored twice to make him the seventh player in school history to score 50 career goals, but it was Mike Richardson who broke a 2-2 tie with 5:33 to play that lifted UNC Greensboro to a 3-2 win over Stetson in non-conference men's soccer action Sunday afternoon at UNCG Soccer Stadium.

Richardson, who had a goal and an assist in Friday night's win over Jacksonville, hit a blast from 14 yards out off a feed by Scott Jones for the game-winner and keep the Spartans perfect on the season (2-0-0). Richardson, a senior from Dobson, NC, also added an assist to give him six points already this season (2g, 2a) after logging just eight points (3g, 2a) all of last year.

Patterson, a two-time All-American and a candidate for the Hermann Trophy, scored a pair of goals 12:29 apart to bring UNCG back from a pair of deficits. Stetson scored first off a corner kick at 5:54. Set Carpentiro knocked home a rebound from right in front of the net to give the Hatters a 1-0 lead. Patterson, however, scored at 12:15 to tie the score. Richardson intercepted a pass and tipped it ahead to Patterson, who chipped it over the encroaching keeper from 20 yards out.

Stetson's Tanner Wolfe, who assisted on the first goal, gave the Hatters a 2-1 lead at 18:11. Ben Dyon lobbed a long free kick into the box and Wolfe headed it just under the cross bar from 12 yards out to give Stetson (0-2-0) the lead again.

But Patterson tied the game again at 24:44 and became the seventh Spartan to score 50 career goals in the process. Jones made a nifty run, weaving through several defenders. He fed the ball to Patterson, who hit a blast from nine yards away to tie the score and surpass the milestone. Jones, also a Hermann Trophy candidate now has 34 assists in his career, which ranks sixth in UNCG history.

Patterson, a semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy last year, is only the third to do it in UNCG's Division I era, the last one to do it being Alejandro Moreno, who currently plays for Houston in the MLS. In Patterson's career, UNCG is 35-8-0 when he records at least one point, including 29-3-0 over the last three seasons. In 67 career matches, Patterson has 50 goals and 18 assists for 118 points, which is 10th-best all-time at UNCG.

UNCG outshot Stetson, 19-8, on the day. Freshman Chad Janda, making his collegiate debut, picked up the win in goal for the Spartans.

UNCG will host Campbell on Wednesday at 7 pm.
