GREENSBORO, NC Chrissy Finch and Brittany Zahn each put away 15 kills to lead Appalachian State to a 3-0 win over UNC Greensboro in Southern Conference women's volleyball action Saturday afternoon at Fleming Gym.
ASU (10-7, 4-1 SoCon) defeated UNCG (11-7, 2-4 SoCon) by scores of 30-26, 30-20 and 30-24.
Sophomore Liz Benzschawel led the Spartans with 11 kills, while senior Theresa Hart and sophomore Kaitlyn Nortz each put away 10 kills apiece in the loss. Freshman Catherine Hanners led the team with 14 digs, while Hart had 12.
Freshman Lisa Fawell handed out 33 assists for the Spartans.
Amy Lewis contributed to the Mountaineer victory with 11 kills to go with Finch and Zahn's effort. Cassie Engelgau had match-leading 21 digs and Lorelle Rau dished out 42 assists.
Appalachian State scored the first four points of game one to take the early lead. UNCG finally took its first lead at 12-11 after a kill by Hart. The Spartans led for the final time, 16-15, on a put away by Benzschawel. From that point, three straight Mountaineer points gave them the lead for good as they took the opening game, 30-26.
Game two also say ASU jump out to an early lead this time it was 5-1 in the opening minutes after a Spartan attack error. UNCG never got any closer than two points the rest of the game as the Mountaineers cruised into the intermission up 2-0 after a dominating 30-20 win in game two. Zahn led the way with seven of her 15 kills in the game.
The final game was tied 16-16, before four straight Appalachian State points put them in the drivers seat up 20-16 which forced UNCG into a timeout. Benzschawel, the Madison, WI native, responded for the Spartans with a kill coming out of the timeout to make it 20-17 but that was as close as the home team would get in a 30-24 loss in game three.
The loss marks the first home setback of the season for the Spartans and also represents only the fourth by a 3-0 score.
UNCG hosts SoCon foe Davidson on Sunday at 4 pm.
