GREENVILLE, SC Junior Ricky Orton went 3-for-5 and Greg Feltes drove in two runs to give UNC Greensboro the 9-4 victory and a Southern Conference doubleheader split over Furman at Furman Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Paladins took the 7-3 win in game one to earn the split.
UNCG (17-15, 5-4 SoCon) put a run on the board first in the second inning of game one. Orton hit a one-out RBI single to center to score Sean Snell who reached on a fielder's choice earlier. Furman responded with three runs in the third to take the 3-1 lead. Connor Lind sent a RBI single down the rightfield line and Tony Maccani drove in two on a single up the middle.
Brandon Harvey scored on a wild pitch in the fourth, cutting the Furman lead to 3-2. The Paladins, however, tacked on two more runs in the same inning off a wild pitch and a RBI single from Bobby Hubbard. UNCG's Tim Carrier opened up the fifth with a single to left and was brought home on a groundout by Scott Schneider.
Furman (9-22, 5-7 SoCon) added a run in the fifth when Lind hit a RBI single through the left side and in the sixth off a RBI single from Jay Jackson for the 7-3 advantage.
Ian Perry (3-1) was credited with the win after allowing just three hits in 4-1/3 innings of work.
Junior Matt Gibbs (3-2) took the loss after giving up four runs on six hits in three innings on the mound.
The Spartans used an early surge to take the 9-4 win in game two.
UNCG grabbed the early 4-0 lead in the first. Carrier opened up the game with a single and came home on a single from Schneider. A Feltes triple to right-center scored two runs and a RBI single from Snell brought Feltes home. Lind scored for the Paladins in the first off a single from Spence Gibbs, 4-1 Spartans.
With the bases loaded in the fourth, Gaski sent a sacrifice fly to center to score Logan Smith. The Spartans added another run in the inning off a passed ball. Furman responded with two runs in the same inning on a two-run home run from Joe Daysh, making it 6-3 in favor of UNCG.
A RBI single from Orton and a RBI triple from freshman Corey Overholtzer in the fifth gave UNCG the commanding 8-3 lead. The Paladins answered again in the same inning with a RBI double from Hubbard. Adam Deleo, however, gave the Spartans an insurance run in the ninth after blasting his second roundtripper of the season over the leftfield fence. Clinton McKinney pitched a scoreless ninth to assure the win for UNCG.
Senior Nick Starnes (2-2) earned the win after scattering just one hit in 3-1/3 innings of relief. Sophomore starter Kory Judd allowed four runs on five hits in 4-2/3 innings on the hill and struck out a game-high six batters.
Mason Smith (1-5) was given the loss after giving up seven runs on 10 hits in 4-2/3 innings on the mound.
UNCG returns to the diamond on Tuesday when the Spartans travel to
Winston-Salem, NC to take on the ACC's Wake Forest at 3 pm.
