UNCG volleyball concludes UNCG/HPU Triad Challenge with 4-0 record

GREENSBORO, NC The UNC Greensboro volleyball team had to go to a fifth game with Austin Peay but pulled out a 3-2 win over the Lady Govs and defeated cross-town rival North Carolina A&T, 3-0 to conclude their first weekend of action undefeated at 4-0. Sophomore's Catherine Hanners and Branagan Fuller were named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts throughout the weekend.

Fuller led the way for the Spartans on the offensive end leading the Spartans with 28 kills against Austin Peay and 14 against North Carolina A&T. Hanners provided excellent defense throughout the weekend and picked up 27 and 11 digs, respectively in both Spartan wins on Saturday.

In the first match against Austin Peay the Spartans started slow and allowed the Lady Govs to run out to an early 6-1 lead. UNCG tried to keep it close but couldn't over come the Lady Govs who led the entire way and took game one by a score of 30-25.

In the second game the Spartans again found themselves down early but they regrouped and were able to match Austin Peay point-for-point and with the game tied at 21, UNCG rattled off four straight points and held on for the 30-26 win. The third game was close throughout but this time it was the Lady Govs that were able to take the momentum at a crucial point, with the game tied at 17 Austin Peay scored the next point and was able to hold on for a 30-25 win.

With Austin Peay leading the match 2-1, the fourth game was close from the beginning and featured eight lead changes. The Lady Govs had several chances to put the match away but timely kills from Fuller and redshirt freshman, Caley Redden kept the Spartans in the hunt. UNCG found themselves serving for the game and put it away on an ace from Fuller to win the game 34-32 and send the match to a fifth game.

The fifth and deciding match was tight from the outset. The teams traded points and had the score tied at seven before UNCG went on a 3-0 run and sealed the 15-13 win with a kill from Parma, OH native, Kaitlyn Nortz.

In the late game against A&T, the Spartans were led by Fuller and freshman Alissa Beaudway who each tallied 14 and 13 kills, respectively while Hanners and Kayleigh Knerr both had double-digit digs with 10 and 11, respectively.

UNCG dominated the Aggies and never trailed in the match. The Spartans led by as much as 14 points in game one and won the game 30-10. UNCG finished the second game on a 9-4 run and took a 30-21 victory and sealed the match with a 30-17 win.

In other action at UNCG, Radford picked up its first win of the season with a 3-0 win over A&T in the first match of the day. Game scores were, 30-20, 30-22 and 30-22. The Highlanders were led by Melinda Clelland and Heidi Haubrich who both tallied 12 kills. Josie Hanners added 37 assists while Lauren Clary recorded 17 digs. A&T was led by Aundia Gray who tallied six kills and Janae Mitchell who had 10 digs.

Austin Peay, who was playing in the second consecutive five-game match, defeated Radford 3-1. The Lady Govs won the first game 31-29 and dropped the second game 30-19 before taking three straight wins to take the match. The Lady Govs were led by Dodi Szymska who had 21 kills and Kirstin Distler who had 24 digs. Radford's Lauren Clary led the way on both sides of the ball and tallied a team-high 17 kills and 26 digs in the loss.

The Spartans are next in action August 28 when they head to Greenville, NC to take on East Carolina. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 pm.
