BLACKSBURG, VA The UNC Greensboro softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to No. 24-ranked Virginia Tech in softball action at the Virginia Tech Softball Park on Wednesday evening. The Spartans fell, 8-0 in the first game and dropped the late game, 2-1.
The Spartans were led by Mary Greenway who was 1-for-6 from the plate in both games and tallied UNCG's lone run of the evening while Whitney Sirois tallied one RBI.
Sirois has been excellent from the plate for the Spartans as of late, recording multiple hits five times already this season.
Pitchers Amber Harrell and Hannah Angel both saw action in the circle and both dropped their respective starts. Harrell pitched game one and fell to 6-7 on the season after allowing eight runs on 10 hits in 4.0 innings of work Angel fell to 3-8 on the season after allowing two runs on eight hits in a complete game effort.
After failing to get a hit in the early game, the Spartans got their bats going in the late game and combined for five hits. UNCG put a run on the board in the top of the first inning. The Spartans got things started with a leadoff double by Mary Greenway, The Roanoke, VA native advanced to third on a ground out by Brittany Ausley and was plated on an RBI single by Whitney Sirois.
The Hokies answered back and tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a run by Jenna Rhodes. Rhodes reached on a throwing error by third baseman Emily Akiyama and then stole second base. She then scored on an RBI single from Charisse Mariconda to tie the game.
Virginia Tech took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Hokies led off the inning with a single from Caroline Stolle. Anna Zitt, pinch running for Stolle, moved to third base with two wild pitches and was plated on a ground out to third base.
UNCG threatened to tie the score in the fifth inning, putting runners on first and second. Virginia Tech pitcher Elly Gosby walked Whitney Sirois and Leslie Furness followed with a single to centerfield. UNCG loaded the bases when Mary Catherine Vercoe was walked, but the inning ended when Gosby struck out Emily Akiyama.
In the early game, UNCG couldn't get anything going and off Virginia Tech ace Angela Tincher who recorded 13 strikeouts in the game. She also sent UNCG to their fifth shutout loss of the season while picking up her 94th career win, which set a new school record.
The Spartans will take some time off before returning to UNCG Softball Stadium when they host cross-town rival North Carolina A&T in a mid-week doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm.
