CHATTANOOGA, TN The UNC Greensboro softball team dropped a 9-2 game to Chattanooga in Southern Conference softball action on Saturday afternoon at Jim Frost Stadium.
UNCG (9-18, 0-3 SoCon) was led by Mary Greenway and Leslie Furness who were both 1-for-3 from the plate. Greenway picked up her team leading 20th stolen base of the season and tallied an RBI in the loss. Kristen Gable and Laura Olenderski each tallied a run on the afternoon.
Amber Harrell and Hannah Angel split time in the circle each twirling 3.0 innings of work. Harrell got the start and allowed five runs on five hits while Angel allowed four runs on four hits.
The Lady Mocs jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first inning after tallying four runs on five hits. After leading off with a line out to right field, Chattanooga tallied hits on their next three at bats and took the lead on the sacrifice fly from Katie Blevins. Chattanooga added four more runs and capitalized on two UNCG errors which led to two unearned runs.
UNCG was able to cut into the lead in the third inning with help from a triple from Greenway. Kristen Gabel, who played well throughout the weekend, reached on a Chattanooga error and advanced to second on a wild pitch and was driven home with the Greenway triple.
The Spartans added another run in the sixth inning from Olenderski but four runs in the bottom of the inning from the Lady Mocs put the game out of reach. Chattanooga tallied four hits and was able to use a two-run home run from Michelle Fuzzard to claim their first Southern Conference series of the season.
The Spartans will step out of conference action for their next two games. UNCG travels to Liberty on Tuesday for a doubleheader and will host cross-town rival, North Carolina A&T in twinbill action on Wednesday.
