RADFORD, VA The UNC Greensboro softball team recorded a season-high 12 hits in a 10-9 extra inning victory over Radford in non-conference softball action on Tuesday night. The Highlanders took the first game, 4-0 as the Spartans picked up the split.
Kristen Gabel led UNCG (13-20, 0-3 SoCon) from behind the plate. She was 3-of-4 with one run and a team-high three RBI on the afternoon. Mary Greenway tallied a season-high five stolen bases and runs her season total to a perfect, 28-of-28 while Kaitlin Merkt recorded her third home run of the season.
Hannah Angel (6-9) picked up the win in the late game after allowing nine runs on 14 hits in 7.2 innings of work while striking out three. Amber Harrell fell to 8-10 on the season after allowing four runs on five hits in the early game.
UNCG couldn't get anything going from behind the plate in the first game and only recorded two hits. The Highlanders weren't hitting all that well themselves and only recorded five hits in the game but managed the 4-0 win their third shutout of the Spartans this season.
The Spartans came out strong in the second game after being shutout for the fifth time this season in the early game. UNCG was able to open up the early 3-0 lead behind runs from Greenway, Olenderski and Merkt but the Highlanders were able to get right back in the game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Radford took a 5-3 lead in the fifth on a leadoff triple from Ashley Carlson and was plated with a single from Jenn Everhart. The Highlanders kept their scoring going and added two more runs with a two-run home run from Sarah Himan. The Spartans rallied back with a leadoff home run from Merkt in the next inning but Radford was able to match their run in the bottom of the inning to keep the 5-4 lead.
UNCG sent the game into extra innings with two runs in the top of the seventh. Gabel hit a leadoff single and scored on the next play when Greenway reached on an error by the first baseman and then advanced to second. Greenway picked up her third stolen base of the season and rounded the bases on a sacrifice fly from Whitney Miller to tie the game.
Radford had a chance and had runners on first and second base but Larissa Williams lined into a double play to end the inning. The Spartans used two two-run hits, good for four runs in the eighth to hold off the host Highlanders. Emily Akiyama hit a double to left center to send Kayla Hensley and Merkt home while another single from Gabel plated Akiyama and Mouse.
Radford again had a chance to make things interesting late and a home run by Shannon Keefe put two runs on the board and an RBI double from Everhart added another score but the Highlanders again lined into a double play to end the inning.
The Spartans return to the diamond this weekend when they host SoCon rival, Western Carolina in a league series. The teams will square of in doubleheader action on Saturday beginning at 1 pm and will conclude the weekend with a single game on Sunday.
