Storylines

- UNC Greensboro hosts the Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championship this weekend at UNCG Soccer Stadium. Second-seeded College of Charleston will take on No. 3 Samford at 5 p.m. Friday, followed by top-seeded UNCG vs. No. 4 Davidson at 7:30 p.m. The championship match is 1 p.m. Sunday.

- UNCG was involved in one-goal games with each of the other three teams in the tournament this season. The Spartans beat College of Charleston 1-0 on Oct. 23, but Davidson and Samford handed UNCG its only two SoCon losses of the season, 2-1 defeats on Oct. 2 and Oct. 16, respectively.

- The Spartans (13-6, 9-2 SoCon) enter the tournament having won four straight after the loss to Samford. Davidson (10-9-1, 7-3-1 SoCon) is unbeaten in six matches (5-0-1) since a 2-0 loss to College of Charleston on Oct. 8. The Wildcats got into the tournament on the last day of the regular season, winning a 2-1 game against Georgia Southern on Oct. 31 to force a tie with Elon in the league standings. Davidson held the tiebreaker after beating the Phoenix head-to-head on Oct. 4.

- UNCG enters the Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championship seeking its seventh tournament title and first since 2006. The Spartans have reached the title game in each of the last three seasons. UNCG holds a 23-5-3 record in 12 SoCon tournament appearances all-time.

- Davidson is 13-10-2 in 14 appearances. The Wildcats won the first three tournament titles in league history, from 1994-96, but have appeared in the title game just twice since then, in 1999 and 2004.

- The Spartans locked up their fourth straight SoCon regular-season title with a 1-0 win over Elon on Oct. 29. Freshman Tabitha Padgett scored the game-winner in the 71st minute, while keeper Kelsey Kearney posted her eighth shutout of the season.

- In last season's SoCon tournament, UNCG took a 6-0 win over Appalachian State in the first round before playing to a 0-0 draw with Furman in the semifinals and advancing to the title game in penalty kicks, 4-2. The Spartans settled for another scoreless draw in the final, but fell in penalty kicks to Western Carolina, 2-0. Kearney did not allow a goal the entire tournament, working 292 minutes with 10 saves over three games.

- Davidson fell 1-0 to Furman in the first round of last season's tournament.

- UNCG is 19-4-2 against Davidson all-time, including a 2-1-1 mark in SoCon tournament play. The Wildcats took a 3-2 win in Greensboro the last time the teams met in the league tournament, in 2004.

- In the last meeting between the two teams, Davidson's Lauren Conner scored in the 80th minute to break a 1-all tie as the Wildcats knocked off the Spartans 2-1 on Oct. 2 of this season to end UNCG's 33-match SoCon regular-season unbeaten streak (31-0-2). Courtney Hart got Davidson on the board first in the 48th minute, but UNCG's Jenn Partenheimer evened the score in the 58th minute.

- The All-Southern Conference teams will be well-represented this weekend. Ten of the 11 first-team selections will be on the field Friday, with UNCG and Samford boasting four apiece. The Spartans' Padgett and Samford's Amber Cress were named the Co-Players of the Year, while UNCG's Jen Bronson, Partenheimer and Lauren Lopez and Samford's Natalie Fleming, Theresa Henry and Alyssa Whitehead were also on the first team. College of Charleston's Brittany Schneider and Davidson's Kyri Bye-Nagel were also first-team picks. UNCG's Kristin Player, Cat Barnekow and Kearney were second-team selections, as were Charleston's Annie Pease and Davidson's Blakely Low, Courtney Hart and Amanda Fink. Padgett was the SoCon's Freshman of the Year and was joined on the All-Freshman Team by teammate Lauren Hein, College of Charleston's Alyssa Bearden, Samford's Sabbath McKiernan-Allen and Davidson's Louise Timboe.

- On Oct. 5, UNCG's Lauren Lopez was named one of the 10 national finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. Fans can vote as often as once a day for Lopez at www.seniorclassaward.com or by texting W5 to 74567. Voting is open through Nov. 13, and fan votes will be combined with votes from coaches and media to determine the winner. The winner will be announced at the NCAA Division I Women's College Cup in early December.

- UNCG is No. 9 in the NSCAA Southeast Region poll, one spot ahead of Samford. The two SoCon schools are the only ones not from the ACC in the poll.

- UNCG opened the season with a brutal non-conference slate, dropping its season-opener 2-1 to then-unranked Wake Forest - which is now up to 10th in the NSCAA poll - on Aug. 23, before facing then-No. 11 Duke (now unranked), then-No. 1 North Carolina (now No. 5) and then-No. 4 Stanford (now No. 1) in consecutive games. The Spartans also lost to then-unranked Virginia Tech, which is now 19th in the coaches' poll, on Sept. 11.

- Twelve of UNCG's 19 games have been decided by just one goal. Seven of those matches have resulted in 1-0 scores, while the other five were 2-1 games. Of UNCG's six losses on the season, five of them were by one goal.

- Player leads UNCG in scoring with 20 points on the season on seven goals and six assists. Padgett is second with 19 points on eight goals and three assists, while Hein is third with 14 points on five goals and four assists. Kearney owns a 0.80 goals against average on the year with six shutouts and 64 saves in 19 games (1,679 minutes).

- Davidson is led in scoring by Bye-Nagel, who was recently named the league's Player of the Month for October. Bye-Nagel has 20 points on the year on eight goals and four assists, all team highs. Low is second with 16 points on seven goals and two assists. In goal, Loring Ward and Jessie Baxa have split time almost evenly with 13 appearances and 10 starts each. Ward has a 1.51 goals against average with 31 saves and three shutouts in 834 minutes, while Baxa has logged 978 minutes, two shutouts, 36 saves and a 1.66 GAA.

- Davidson is 4-6-1 on the road this season, while UNCG is 7-3 at home.

- The Cougars (12-6-1, 8-3 SoCon) handed Samford (12-1-4, 7-1-3 SoCon) its only loss of the season, a 1-0 contest on Sept. 27 in Charleston, S.C. The Bulldogs are 6-0-3 since then, while the Cougars slumped a bit to end the season, losing two of their last three.

- The squads met in the first round of last season's SoCon tournament, playing to a 1-1 draw. Samford advanced in penalty kicks, 4-1. Western Carolina topped Samford in the semifinals, 1-0.
