Spartans fall on the road at Appalachian State, 67-49

Box Score

BOONE, N.C. - UNC Greensboro shot just 26.5 percent in the second half and committed 21 turnovers as Appalachian State took a 67-49 win on Saturday. The Mountaineers used a 10-2 run with less than 5 minutes left to blow the game open.

UNCG (7-19, 4-14 Southern Conference) got nine points each from Monique Floyd and Brey Dorsett. The Spartans' loss was their 10th in a row.

The Mountaineers (16-10, 12-5 SoCon), winners of nine of 10, got a double-double from Anna Freeman, who had 18 points and 12 rebounds, both game highs. Sam Ramirez scored 16 points and Ashlen Dewart added 11 as the Apps put three players in double figures.

After a Sidnei Harmon layup made it a 10-point game at 54-43 with 5:18 to play, the Mountaineers scored 10 of the game's next 12 points to stretch their lead to eight. Freeman capped the run with the last of her four 3-pointers, which made it 63-45 with 2:39 to play.

UNCG trailed just 34-26 at the half, but saw App score the first two buckets of the second half to push its lead to 12 with 18:30 left. The Spartans would creep back into it, however, getting consecutive baskets from Dorsett, a jumper from Harmon and a fastbreak layup from TaShama Banner over the next four minutes to complete an 8-0 run and get within four points at 38-34 with 14:35 left.

Freeman halted the run with a 3-pointer and Ramirez put the Mountaineers back in double figures to stay with one of her four 3s with 11:14 to play, making the score 46-35.

The game was close in the first half, and Amanda Leigh's 3-pointer 6 minutes in gave UNCG its first lead of the day, 11-10. Chakeitha Weldon hit a jumper on the other end to put App back on top, but Floyd knocked down a pair of free throws with 11:24 to play in the first to restore UNCG's one-point lead at 13-12.

That would ultimately prove to be the Spartans' last lead, as Kelsey Sharkey converted a layup and Dewart hit the back end of a two-shot foul to put App back up by two. Lakiah Hyson hit a jumper to tie the game at 15 with 9:14 left in the opening stanza, but a Ramirez jumper just 8 seconds later put App on top to stay.

The Mountaineers would stretch their first-half lead to seven before UNCG cut it to 24-22 on a Dorsett 3 with 4:16 left, but that was as close as the Spartans would get the rest of the day.

UNCG had 20-plus turnovers for the first time in more than a month. The last time the Spartans turned the ball over that many times was when they had 21 miscues in a 61-45 loss at Furman on Jan. 19.

App took advantage of the mistakes, scoring 26 points off UNCG turnovers.

UNCG's Agne Girstautaite had a solid all-around day with eight points, five rebounds and three blocked shots.

The Spartans went just 9-for-34 from the floor in the second half as App pulled away late.

UNCG returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Furman in its final home game of the season. Seniors Hyson and Dee Corbett and juniors Banner and Girstautaite, who are seniors academically, will be honored as part of the Senior Day celebration. Opening tip is set for 7 p.m. at Fleming Gym.
