GREENSBORO, N.C.—UNCG men's soccer dominated play for 120 minutes but still came away with a scoreless draw in a key Southern Conference match with Davidson, Wednesday at UNCG Soccer Stadium.

Needing a win to stay in the thick of the SoCon regular season race, the Spartans (4-6-1 overall, 1-1-1 SoCon) out-shot the Wildcats (5-5-2, 1-1-1), 16-8, and took 12 corner kicks to just one for Davidson. But UNCG never found the back of the net and was forced to settle for its first tie of the season.

"We've left a lot of points (in the standings) on the table in the last two matches," said UNCG head coach Justin Maullin. "We really needed a win tonight if we hoped to stay in the hunt for another title. We can still win it, but now it's out of our hands. Now we have to hope to turn it around with a tough road match at Wofford on Saturday."

Despite the lopsided advantage statistically, the Spartans never really got it going. UNCG did find the back of the net midway through the first half but the goal was waved off when the Spartans were whistled for off-sides.

Other than one opportunity, most of UNCG's shot attempts came from beyond the 18 yard box. The Spartans managed just one shot in 20 minutes of overtime play.

Since scoring six combined goals in consecutive wins over Gardner-Webb and Furman, UNCG has managed just one goal in its last three matches over a span of more than 300 minutes.

"Our key attack players are not producing," said Maullin. "We're getting good production from some of the guys but others need to pick it up. We're playing well in spurts and we're dominating games but we need to win them. Three or four times this season we've been better than our opponent and come away with a poor result. That can't continue."

Junior goalkeeper Peyton Ford made one save en route to his third shutout of the season and the 12th of his career. Ford, who currently ranks third on UNCG's career shutout list, now trails current assistant coach Jay Benfield by two for second on the list.

Davidson's Chip Sanders stopped four shots to get the shutout for the Wildcats.

UNCG next visits Wofford, 7 p.m., Saturday in Spartanburg, S.C.
