GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Eileen Horsmon hit a pair of home runs Saturday, lifting UNCG to a doubleheader split with Furman. The Spartans won game one 7-3 before the Paladins came back for an 8-4 win in game two.
Horsmon was 3-for-3 with three RBI in game one, hitting a solo home run in the second inning for her first blast of the season. She added another solo shot in the fifth inning of game two.
Furman (11-15, 5-3 Southern Conference) tied the first game at 1 in the third inning on Morgan Hughey's RBI single off of Heather Robb's glove at second, but UNCG (12-15, 3-2 SoCon) answered with two in the bottom half on Kristen Gabel's two-run homer, her first of the season.
The Paladins again tied it in the top of the next inning, as Hannah Pace scored on a wild pitch and Stephanie Field knocked in Stephanie Spain with an infield single.
UNCG once again had the answer, reclaiming the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman Katelyn Bedwell led off with a triple to right center when center fielder Field and right fielder Nikki Legg collided trying to make a play on what would have likely been just a single. Horsmon followed with a single up the middle to score Bedwell and eventually came around on a wild pitch. Gabel added an RBI single up the middle to make it 6-3.
The Spartans added an insurance run in the fifth, with Horsmon rapping another RBI single up the middle.
Gabel finished 2-for-3 with three RBI in the contest, while Alex Emeterio was 2-for-4.
Cory Mattson (6-9) allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks to pick up the win. Lauren Collier (5-11) took the loss for Furman, allowing seven runs on nine hits and four walks.
The Paladins stranded seven runners in the contest, including leaving the bases loaded in the second. Singles by Hughey and Spain and a walk to Alex Bimonte seemed to have Furman in business, but Mattson induced a grounder to end the threat.
Field, Hughey and Spain had two-hit games for Furman.
Game two saw Furman jump out to a 6-0 lead. The Paladins took advantage of two errors in the first inning to score an unearned run but Jordan Jewett nailed Jessie Homesley at the plate to end the inning and limit the damage.
The Paladins blew the game open with a five-run third, highlighted by Hughey's grand slam to left center. Furman pounded out five hits in the inning and took advantage of two more UNCG errors.
UNCG got a couple of runs back in the bottom half of the third on Emeterio's RBI triple and Kaitlin Merkt's sacrifice fly, but Furman pushed its advantage back up to six runs with a pair in the fourth on Homesley's RBI double and Spain's infield single.
Horsmon's homer in the fifth drew UNCG within five runs and Gabel scored on an error in the sixth to cut the deficit to four, but UNCG couldn't push across another run.
Josie Felix (4-5) took the loss, allowing six runs – four earned – on eight hits and a walk in 3 innings. Her counterpart, Kayla Suskauer (6-4), picked up the win by allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and four walks.
Hughey was 2-for-3 with five RBI for Furman, while Field, Homesley and Emily Boyer had two hits each. Jewett was 2-for-2 at the plate to lead UNCG in game two.
The teams wrap up the series with the rubber game Sunday at 1 p.m.
