GREENSBORO, N.C. – No. 14 Wake Forest got a pair of goals from All-American Katie Stengel and poured in four second-half goals to blow open a tight game as the Demon Deacons cruised past UNCG on Friday, 5-0.
With Wake Forest (3-0) holding a 1-0 lead in the second half, Stengel scored a pair of goals less than nine minutes apart to give the Deacs some breathing room. Stengel teamed up with Jordan Feger for both goals, twice converting passes from the right wing. Stengel, a preseason member of the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List, notched her first goal of the evening in the 61st minute, then added a world-class strike in the 70th, one-timing Feger's cross into the upper right corner.
Kelsey Zalimeni made it a 4-0 contest just minutes later, nodding home her first goal of the season in the 77th minute. Jessica Mandarich and Kristen Meier picked up assists on the play.
Lee Page put the exclamation point on the win in the 88th minute, collecting a loose ball near the top of the box and slotting it home lower left corner.
UNCG (0-2) was right there with Wake in the opening half, as the Demon Deacons led just 1-0 at the break. Rachel Nuzzolese got the Deacs on the board in the 27th minute, banging in a direct free kick from about 25 yards out for her second goal of the season.
The Spartans were held to just two shots on the night, but both were solid scoring chances.
Senior Cat Barnekow nearly got the equalizer in the 40th minute, but her blast from 20 yards was punched over the crossbar by Wake keeper Aubrey Bledsoe.
Kristin Player had UNCG's only other shot of the game, getting off a high attempt in the 49th minute.
Bledsoe picked up the win in the net, making one save in picking up the shutout. Her counterpart, Kelsey Kearney, made three saves in taking the loss.
UNCG returns to action Sunday at East Carolina for a 6 p.m. start.
