CHARLOTTE, N.C. – UNCG dropped a doubleheader at Charlotte on Thursday, falling 14-2 in game one and 11-9 in game two.
The Spartans (6-13) led 2-0 after three innings, but the 49ers (11-10) scored 14 unanswered runs in two innings to put the game into mercy rule territory.
Senior Alex Emeterio led off the game with a home run to right, and UNCG made it 2-0 when Emeterio scored on Katelyn Bedwell's RBI single in the third.
Charlotte claimed the lead with a four-run third, highlighted by Chelsea Stamey's three-run home run. The 49ers then sent 15 batters to the plate in the fourth, scoring 10 runs despite recording just three hits. Game two also saw an abundance of offense. Charlotte came from behind for the win in that contest, as well, rallying from an 8-5 deficit.
The 49ers led 2-0 after two innings thanks to back-to-back homers from Kalie Lang and Kleinsmith, but the Spartans pulled even in the top of third on Eileen Horsmon's two-run home run, her team-best fifth of the season.
Charlotte reclaimed the lead with a three-run third, but UNCG came roaring back with a six-run fourth inning. UNCG batted around in the frame, with Emeterio hitting a two-run single and Bedwell drilling a three-run homer to match Horsmon for the team lead.
The 49ers had one more rally in them, scoring five runs in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead for good. Briana Gwaltney had a two-run single, while Lang followed with a two-run double and Kleinsmith had an RBI single.
Emeterio got the Spartans back within a run with an RBI single in the fifth, but the 49ers restored their two-run lead with a run in the bottom half.
