GREENSBORO, N.C. –
The UNCG softball team won the series with a 5-3 victory against Appalachian State Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

The Spartans improve to 29-11, 9-5 on the season while the Mountaineers drop to 21-15, 13-5 in the SoCon.

Redshirt junior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) went the distance to pick up her 17th win of the season, allowing three earned runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts. Alissa Schoelkopf fell to 13-9 with the loss after allowing five earned runs on seven hits.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Mountaineers staged a rally adding a run on a hit by pitch to cut the lead to 5-3. Appalachian State loaded the bases after Lindsay Loudermilk singled with one out. Allie Cashion walked and a fielder's choice to Meghan Smith recorded the second out. Ashley Seering singled to load the bases, while Sohl was hit by a pitch to make it 5-3. With two outs, Hanks ended the threat with a swinging strikeout to Caroline Rogers to clinch the victory for the Spartans.

UNCG scored two runs in the bottom of the first after a wild pitch and an RBI walk from senior Eileen Horsmon (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) gave the Spartans the early lead. Junior Aisha Figueroa (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) started the game with a single up the middle. After a sacrifice bunt from Danielle Vega (Rialto, Calif./Aquinas), classmate Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) walked to put runners on first and second. Junior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park) singled to load the bases for UNCG. A wild pitch allowed Figueroa to score and back-to-back walks gave the Spartans a 2-0 advantage.

The Mountaineers rallied to tie the game with two runs on two outs in the top of the third inning. Appalachian State started the comeback with a one out walk from Dani Heichen. After a groundout, Allie Cashion cut the lead to 2-1 on a double to left center. Meghan Smith followed with a swallow single to right field to tie the game at 2-2.

In the bottom of the third, UNCG scored three runs thanks to a bases-clearing double from sophomore Dominique Madruga (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic). With one out and a runner on first, Horsmon lined a double to right center. Sophomore Tatiana Alcala (Oxnard, Calif./Pacifica) singled to third base to load the bases for UNCG. Madruga almost hit her first home run of the season but it hit off the wall to give the Spartans the lead.

UNCG returns to action when they travel to Wilmington, N.C. for a single game against UNCW Tuesday, April 16 starting at 5 p.m.
